Collector’s Notes
David Kuo's jewelry is particularly interesting because the enameling tradition behind it was a family practice. Kuo has described learning the champlevé process through his father, artist Kuo Ming Chiao, with the family refining the historic technique to create their own distinctive designs and colors. Their description also notes something especially appropriate to this necklace: because of the variables inherent in the process, no two pieces are exactly alike.
Champlevé differs from surface-painted enamel in that recessed areas in the metal are filled with enamel, allowing the metal itself to remain visible as part of the design. Kuo's work transforms that traditional technique into highly expressive jewelry filled with saturated color, abstract florals, butterflies, birds and other organic imagery.
