Founded by Margaretha and Wolfgang Ley in Munich in 1978, Escada became one of the defining luxury labels of the 1980s, known for treating color and print almost as a form of visual optimism. Margaretha Ley had trained as a model and understood how clothing transformed on the body; her collections became famous for saturated palettes, unexpected pattern combinations and meticulously coordinated separates.
